Central- and Eastern European Network

The Central- and Eastern European Network (CEEN) is a platform for dialogue among the Presidents of National Academies of Sciences from the countries in Central- and Southeast Europe. The initiative for the CEEN was taken by the European Academy of Sciences and Arts early 2003 in connection with the then upcoming EU enlargement.

CEEN addresses broad issues that are essential:

§ to the optimal integration of Central- and Southeast European scientific communities into the European scientific establishment, while maintaining academic freedom and independence in the process; and

§ to these countries’ full integration into- / enhanced co-operation with the EU, while maintaining the necessary democratic accountability during the progression of the transition and beyond.

Members are invited from the: Academy of Sciences of Albania, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Estonian Academy of Sciences, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Kosova Academy of Sciences and Arts, Latvian Academy of Sciences, Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Academy of Sciences of Moldova, Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts, Polish Academy of Sciences, Romanian Academy, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Srpska, and World Academy of Sciences and Arts.
When appropriate, CEEN comments on current issues with significance for the scientific community or even the society at large. These Memoranda / Declarations draw on broad interdisciplinary experience and holistic approach of the CEEN members. Targets are EU and national political leaders influencing S&T- and other related policies and, as appropriate, relevant leaders of civil society. – see under “Memoranda / Declarations”.
